A Day In The Life...With Links! 10/15/2009
It's been a fairly uneventful few days since my last post in this series but there was one pleasant surprise I will share…all in good time of course.
The weekend was rather ordinary with football and beer taking up all my time on Saturday much to the wife’s chagrin. That being said, she was a pretty good “sport” about it…pardon the pun:-)
Sunday, we took our big trip to Dothan Alabama to experience the movies as they were meant to be seen and to eat a meal that doesn’t include paper bags, plastic utensils or styrofoam cups. We don’t do this every week but we try to make it a point to.
The meal we had was one of the worst Mexican lunches I have ever eaten at a restaurant named La Bamba's but the movies we watched turned out to be entertaining. The wife and I were going to watch Couples Retreat at the matinée but there was a long line waiting to buy tickets five minutes after the movie was scheduled to start so we decided watch Drew Barrymore's latest creation Whip It instead. After Whip It we still wanted to see Couples Retreat so we decided to splurge a little and make it a double feature.
Monday we spent Native American Day taking my father-in-law to Enterprise Alabama for his first of three dialysis treatments for the week since both of us had the day off. He usually gets a ride up there from other relatives and I pic him up after work so it was good to be able to both take him and pick him up.
Late that evening, after we had arrived back home in Geneva Alabama, I experienced the big surprise I mentioned earlier.
About the time I had peeled off my daily skin and was relaxing in my boxers Bandit started barking like it was going out of style. By the time I get out in the back yard to find out what's going on I discover that Loco has a little chipmunk cornered up on the porch.
Fortunately I was able to rescue little fellow pictured below from my ravenous pack of wild dogs:-)

I later released my new friend into the front yard after making sure my two cats were gorging themselves on 'Special Kitty'.
Now for news and views my friends...
All of you are probably familiar with the Nobel Prizes, especially after one of the most recent announcements but what do you know about the Ignobel Prizes? Find out about this and more including some of DARPA's new mind-control projects like free-flying cyborg insects steered from a distances by listening to TWIS
Although I'm am a staunch advocate for healtcare reform, I recently found myself appalled by news of insidious amendments to some reform bills that would force medical insurers to cover prayer as medicine. Please contact the committee members and express your unease if you feel the same trepidation about these proposed amendments as I do.
On a more inspiring note, womens rights advocates risk arrest and public beatings by wearing pants to protest Article 1-5-2 of the Criminal Code of Sudan which penalizes "an act contrary to public morals," "an obscene outfit," and anything "causing annoyance to public feelings" thus allowing any man to accuse any woman of dressing indecently whether she has bare wrists, a bare head or if she is wearing trouser.
A more bizarre story can be found in Egypt as an artificial virginity device sparks controversy among the male populace. Apparently an "online ad from Gigimo promises women "no more worry," because they can restore their virginity for just $29.95. The ad says the "artificial virginity hymen" fits in the vagina and, upon penetration, oozes a bloodlike liquid." I can see where one could get rich selling a product of his nature in a society were virginity is almost always a prerequisite for women who wish to be married.
Back here in the States, Bill Maher—a favorite critic of mine when it comes to politics and religion—continues to make a public ass out of himself by promoting psudoscientific ideas when it comes to medicine. This time it's Maher vs. the Flu Vaccine.
Another bit of sad news for America comes by a recent vote in the Senate by a band of "Pro-Rape" Republicans who seem to think rape victims working for defense contractors should not be allowed to have their day in court.
"In her new book, author Barbara Ehrenreich documents what she says is the destructive power of the positive thinking movement in the United States, from breast cancer to the workplace, to the economy, to politics as a whole. Ehrenreich opens the book by writing about her own experience with breast cancer culture after being diagnosed with the disease in 2000."
Saturday, Obama renewed his vow to end discrimination against gay men and lesbians in the military, but many of the tens of thousands of gay rights supporters who marched from the White House to the Capitol on Sunday, expressed their frustration with Obama "for neither following through on previous vows nor offering a new timetable."
On a more humorous note:
John Stewart critiques CNN's coverage of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” protest compared to their coverage of the tea-baggers protests over the summer. As you will see in the clip below, Stewart really makes the case for a new slogan for this "liberal" news network..."CNN Leaves it There".
Sarah Sliverman—whose sarcasm can be a bit off-putting to those who don't understand it—has a great idea, "sell the Vatican, end world hunger, and get all the pussy...whatever your version of all the pussy means".
Stephen Colbert explains why Jews should not think of huge cross erected on federal land in California's Mojave Desert as "the cross that Jesus died on" but as "a giant 'T' for 'Thanks, Jews!'" Hopefully the ACLU will prevail in this case and justice will prevail.
Since were talking religion now, Mr. Deity recently got schooled by The Science Advisor and learns that "his design for the humans leaves something to be desired."
I have lots more to post but my vinyl floor installers just informed me that the floor in both my bathrooms must be replaced and that I will need the services of a plumber before they can do their job, so I now must man the phones and find a carpenter, a plumber and most importantly...a loan officer:-(
Until next time...Peace love and all that other good stuff.

Nobel & The Obama Derangement Syndrome
During my 45 minute commute to work yesterday, I was a bit surprised to here NPR's Morning Edition reporting that President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize. I knew then it was going to be an eventful day for Fox News and the GOP crazies. Fortunately I don't have to listen to that crap until the end of the day. That being said, I have to admit to being a bit puzzled by this news since Obama has been less than what he could be since taking office.
Later in the morning I learned the reasoning behind the Nobel committee awarding the prize to the president while listing to Democracy Now. According to the chair of the Nobel Committee, Thorbjor Jagland, the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 was awarded to President Barack Obama "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples."
Jagland went on to explain that the committee "would like to enhance, to support what he’s trying to do, what is he trying to achieve. And it is a clear signal to the world that we want to advocate the same as he has done, namely to promote international diplomacy, to strengthen the international institutions, to work for a world free of nuclear arms. All these kind of things, which—I mean, it’s a longstanding history of the Nobel Committee that we have tried to promote that kind of attitudes and that kind of policies."
This sounds reasonable to me but Naomi Klein, like many on the left, thinks it's disappointing and a cheapening of the Nobel Prize to award it to a president who has not yet ended the wars in Afghanistan and in Iraq. She states several other reasons for her opinion in the interview and all of her criticisms are valid but I also find merit in the committees reasoning for awarding the prize to Obama.
Personally I think Rachel Maddow put things in perspective for the left and the right in her piece last night which I've posted below.
